About Hugo De Winter
Born in Ghent on 28 September 1960.
Creativity runs strongly through our family, so over the years it was natural for me to explore many sides of culture. Music, drawing, painting, writing and making things by hand have all been part of that. At every event or family celebration, the question "what is art?" returns to the table, usually with the necessary sense of humour.
Passion is the real guiding principle. I found mine in 1992 when I discovered the work of Spanish painter Joan Miró. He created a distinctive world of strange little creatures and unfamiliar planets. His work is very colourful and may appear rather naive at first, but the more I looked, the more fascinating it became. Since then I have seen and tried to understand hundreds of Miró's works.
I am also inspired by other major figures in painting, including Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.
Painting is deeply relaxing. It always feels like travelling across a white sheet of paper, canvas or wood. Sometimes I know in advance where the journey is heading, and sometimes I arrive somewhere no one has been before.
