Betty Glorieux

Painting and ceramics
Wetteren, Belgium

Betty Glorieux works in painting and ceramics, drawing inspiration from natural forms, ancient cultures and geometry.

After a career in education, Betty studied for seven years at the Municipal Drawing Academy of Wetteren:

  • Observational drawing with Mr Huylebroeck and Mr Van Damme
  • Life drawing with painter Antoon Bogaert
  • Painting with Mr Bogaert, Mr De Smaele and Mr Dobbelaere
  • Ceramics with Della Calberson and Edwin Baele

Betty is inspired by forms from nature and objects from ancient cultures. She combines these influences with geometric forms and develops them into her own interpretation of what she observes.

Her acrylic paintings are stone compositions in which the painting technique and treatment of the ground reinforce the appearance of stone. Depending on the subject, she works either with thin layers of paint or with a palette knife on a prepared surface.

Alongside drawing and painting, she is fascinated by clay as a primal material. Through sketching she searches for lines, planes and forms that can develop into a harmonious object. Earth tones and restrained colours support the works, while the raw material itself generally remains visible and tangible.

Some objects contain movable parts, allowing the character of the sculpture to change. Through this interaction, each becomes a unique piece.
