Woodturning, photography and painting
Ghent, Belgium

Karen Sohie works under the name Soka and currently focuses on turned-wood lamps that combine craft, natural material and atmosphere.

Under the name Soka, I give form to my passion for woodturning. What began as a discovery developed into a deep connection with the material and with the natural world from which it comes.

At present I mainly make lamps. For me, these are not ordinary objects but carriers of atmosphere and calm. Every piece of wood has its own character, grain and spirit. During the turning process, I let myself be guided by what the wood reveals, making every lamp unique.

When light plays through the wood, it creates a soft, warm glow that brings a space to life. It is precisely this combination of craft, nature and experience that appeals to me. Woodturning brings me calm. It is a moment of slowing down and being fully present. I find inspiration in nature and balance at the lathe.

Through my work I want to invite people to pause, to feel and to reconnect with the simplicity and beauty of natural materials.
